A song of ascents; of Solomon. If Yahweh does not build a house, in vain its builders have labored on it. If Yahweh does not watch a city, in vain the watchman has stayed awake.

This is a psalm for people going up to the temple to worship. It is of Solomon. If people are building a house, but Yahweh does not approve of it, those who build it are doing nothing useful. If Yahweh does not protect a city, it is useless for the guards to stay awake watching it.
